This is me, standing in the front yard of my house in Evanston. Yes, that railing needs to be painted, and the garden needs a lot of work.

People often are a little surprised when I tell them I have experience in both construction and journalism. While this combination may be unusual, I think it makes me a better home inspector.

For almost 20 years, I worked as a carpenter and general contractor, mostly renovating homes and small multifamily buildings on Chicago’s North Side, or in the northern suburbs. I’m familiar with the homes in this area because I’ve worked on dozens of them.

I spent another 10 years or so in journalism, including a stint at Fine Homebuilding magazine, one of the nation’s leading sources of information on residential building.

So where did the name Cardinal Inspection Services come from? As a carpenter, I spent a lot of time outside. Working outside is not always easy, but one of the perks is that you get to hear something other than the fan in your computer. I love the sound that cardinals make. (There’s a video in the Posts section, if you’re interested.)

The Cardinal logo was designed by a friend of mine who is now living in Denver. ¬†She works with a lot of independent businesses and organizations, some small and some not-so-small. If you’re in need of graphic design services, send me a note and I’ll give you her contact information.

While I’m probably a little too old to have a 7-year-old son, I’m delighted to say that I have one. Becoming a parent has changed the way I look at a house. Now, I’m more aware of things that might not be safe for kids. I’m not saying that my report will guarantee a child-proof house, but if I see something, I’ll certainly bring it to your attention.

For most of us, buying real estate is a big step. I’d be happy to help you with that by getting you as much information as possible about the property you’re interested in.
